About New Garden (Neuer Garten)
A landscape park along the Heiliger See in northern Potsdam, laid out from 1787. It holds the Marble Palace and Cecilienhof, and forms part of the UNESCO listing.
The New Garden (Neuer Garten) is a landscape park in the north of Potsdam, bordering the Heiliger See and the Jungfernsee. It was laid out from 1787 for Frederick William II of Prussia, its name distinguishing it from the older Sanssouci park. The first design was led by Johann August Eyserbeck, and from 1816 Peter Joseph Lenné reshaped the neglected grounds into an English landscape garden of open lawns and wide pathways, covering 102.5 hectares.
The park contains the Marble Palace (Marmorpalais), erected 1787 to 1792, and Cecilienhof, built in the early twentieth century and site of the 1945 Potsdam Conference. Smaller structures include a palace kitchen, an orangery, a Gothic Library, an ice house, a dairy, a grotto and Dutch-style gatehouses. Praised for its unity of architecture and landscaping, the New Garden is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1990.
