About Einstein Tower (Einsteinturm)

Erich Mendelsohn's Expressionist solar observatory on the Telegrafenberg, built around 1919-1924 to test Einstein's relativity. Still a working observatory; the interior is generally open only on special tours.

The Einstein Tower (Einsteinturm) is an astrophysical solar observatory on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam and one of the landmarks of Expressionist architecture in Germany. It was designed by Erich Mendelsohn, with a fund-raising drive paying for construction dated to about 1919 to 1921, and the observatory became operational in 1924. Its solar telescope was designed by the astronomer Erwin Finlay-Freundlich, and it was built primarily to test Einstein's general theory of relativity by detecting the gravitational redshift of spectral lines in the Sun.

Although the flowing form was meant to be cast in reinforced concrete, much of it was built in brick and covered with sprayed cement plaster, which caused cracking and dampness needing early repairs. The redshift proved very hard to measure and was only confirmed in the 1950s. The tower remains a working observatory, operated by the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam.

Did you know? The tower was built to detect the gravitational redshift predicted by Einstein's relativity, but the shift proved so hard to measure against other solar effects that it was only confirmed in the 1950s.
