About Glienicke Bridge (Glienicker Brücke)

A steel Havel bridge linking Potsdam with Berlin's Wannsee district. On the Cold War border, it hosted the spy exchanges that earned it the name Bridge of Spies.

The Glienicke Bridge (Glienicker Brücke) crosses the Havel at the narrows between the Jungfernsee and the Glienicker Lake, connecting Berlin's Wannsee district with Potsdam. The present steel bridge was inaugurated on 16 November 1907, built by the Johann Caspar Harkort Company of Duisburg after a 1904 Prussian design competition. It replaced an earlier crossing designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and completed in 1834.

During the Cold War the Havel here formed the border between West Berlin and East Germany, and the bridge became a crossing on the inner German border, officially named Brücke der Einheit in the GDR. It was used for three widely cited prisoner and agent exchanges, in 1962, 1985 and 1986, including the 1962 swap of Rudolf Abel for the U-2 pilot Gary Powers. Reporters came to call it the Bridge of Spies, and the 1962 exchange was dramatized in Steven Spielberg's 2015 film of that name.

Did you know? On 10 February 1962 the Americans released the Soviet agent Rudolf Abel here in exchange for Gary Powers, the U-2 pilot shot down in 1960. Spielberg's 2015 film Bridge of Spies retells it.
