About Brandenburg Gate, Potsdam (Brandenburger Tor)
Potsdam's own Brandenburg Gate on Luisenplatz, built 1770 to 1771 for Frederick the Great to mark his Seven Years' War victories, and older than Berlin's more famous gate.
Potsdam's Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) stands on Luisenplatz at the western end of the old town. It was built in 1770-1771, commissioned by Frederick II to celebrate his victories in the Seven Years' War, replacing a simpler gate that had stood on the site from 1733. It was designed by Carl von Gontard and Georg Christian Unger, who each shaped a different side. It is older than Berlin's more famous Brandenburg Gate of 1788-1791 and should not be confused with it.
The country-facing side, toward Luisenplatz, is modelled on the Arch of Constantine in Rome, with projecting Corinthian columns, while the town-facing side is a rendered facade with pilasters and trophies. Pedestrian side passages were added in 1843 under Frederick William IV, and the gate became free-standing after the city wall was demolished around 1900. It marks the western end of Brandenburger Strasse, the pedestrian street running east toward the Church of Saints Peter and Paul.
Did you know? Potsdam's Brandenburg Gate, built in 1770-1771, is older than Berlin's far more famous gate of 1788-1791. Visitors frequently confuse the two, so this 'older than Berlin's' point is worth remembering.
