About Chinese House (Chinesisches Haus)

A 1750s rococo chinoiserie pavilion in Sanssouci Park, gilded and clover-leaf shaped: a European fantasy of China rather than authentic Chinese architecture, built for Frederick the Great.

The Chinese House (Chinesisches Haus) is a garden pavilion in Sanssouci Park, Potsdam, commissioned by Frederick the Great and designed by Johann Gottfried Büring. It was built between 1755 and 1764, a long nine-year effort attributed to the Seven Years' War. Its style is chinoiserie, mixing rococo elements with motifs drawn from Chinese architecture. The pavilion has a trefoil floor plan, a rounded central room with three cabinet rooms, and was modelled on the Maison du trèfle of 1738 at Lunéville.

A tent-like roof rests in the open porch on four gilded sandstone columns, and the cupola is crowned by a gilded figure holding an open parasol. Gilded sandstone figures of people eating, drinking and making music were carved by Johann Melchior Kambly, Johann Gottlieb Heymüller and Johann Peter Benckert. The building served as a decorative pavilion for social occasions rather than an authentic Chinese structure, and the popular 'tea house' name is best treated as traditional.

Did you know? The pavilion is chinoiserie, a European fantasy of China rather than authentic Chinese architecture. Local people are said to have posed as models for its gilded 'Chinese' figures, so treat that framing as interpretation.
