About Pilgrimage Church of Wies (Wieskirche)
A plain white church in an alpine meadow near Steingaden that hides one of Europe's most dazzling Rococo interiors, a UNESCO wonder built around a statue said to have wept.
The Pilgrimage Church of Wies (Wieskirche) is an oval Rococo church set in a meadow in the hamlet of Wies, in the municipality of Steingaden, about 25 kilometres northeast of Füssen in the Pfaffenwinkel. It was designed and built between 1745 and 1754 by the architect Dominikus Zimmermann, whose brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann painted its celebrated ceiling frescoes. The pilgrimage arose after 14 June 1738, when a wooden figure of the Scourged Saviour was, by tradition, reported to have shed tears, drawing pilgrims and prompting a new church. Regarded as a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo, a total work of architecture, stucco, fresco and light, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Dominikus Zimmermann lived beside the church for roughly the last eleven years of his life, and the Wies remains an active pilgrimage church to the Scourged Saviour.
Did you know? The whole church exists because of reported tears. In 1738 a discarded wooden figure of the Scourged Saviour was said to have wept, and pilgrims flocked to the meadow where it stood.
