About Lechfall
Where the river Lech hurls itself over an eight-metre weir into a turquoise gorge, spanned by a footbridge and watched over by a Bavarian king carved in the rock.
The Lechfall is a scenic fall of the river Lech at the southern edge of Füssen, where the river leaves the Northern Limestone Alps and drops into a short gorge, the Lechklamm. Despite its natural appearance, the roughly eight-metre cascade pours over a man-made regulating weir spanning the full width of the river; the gorge below it, however, is natural. A pedestrian footbridge, the Maxsteg, crosses the gorge and gives the classic view of the fall and its turquoise, meltwater-fed water. Nearby stands a monument to King Maximilian II of Bavaria, including a coloured profile relief carved at the site, commemorating his patronage, and the bridge is named for him. The site lies a short walk from the old town and the High Castle, on the historic route of the Via Claudia Augusta, where the Lech long marked a regional boundary.
Did you know? It looks wild, but the Lechfall is partly engineered: the roughly eight-metre drop spills over a man-made weir built across the river. Only the gorge it plunges into, the Lechklamm, is entirely natural.
