About Tegelberg

The rocky mountain above the castles is a cable car ride, a paraglider's launch pad, and a Roman-era site, with a summit most signs get wrong by 160 metres.

The Tegelberg is a mountain in the Ammergau Alps rising directly above Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, near Schwangau. Its summit stands at about 1,881 metres, not the roughly 1,720 metres often quoted, which is the top station of the cable car rather than the peak. The Tegelbergbahn aerial cable car, opened in 1968, climbs from a valley station at about 830 metres to a mountain station near 1,720 metres.

Long established in aviation, the Tegelberg has been a hang-gliding site since the 1970s, is popular with paragliders, and hosted the Hang Gliding World Championship in 1983. Hiking trails cross the mountain, and a summer toboggan run operates near the valley station. The summit and top station command a wide panorama over the Allgäu lakes, Füssen and the surrounding Alps, with the two castles below. On the lower slopes lie the remains of a Roman-era settlement with an archaeological trail.

Did you know? Nearly every guidebook gets the Tegelberg's height wrong. The 1,720 metres so often quoted is only where the cable car stops; the true summit rises to about 1,881 metres, some 160 metres higher up the rock.
