About High Castle of Füssen (Hohes Schloss)
A bishop's summer palace high above Füssen, where the whole courtyard is a five-century-old illusion, windows, bays and towers painted flat onto the walls to fool your eye.
The Hohes Schloss, or High Castle, crowns a hill above Füssen's old town and the river Lech. It was the summer and high residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg, and ranks among the most significant late-Gothic castle complexes in the Allgäu. Though an earlier medieval bishops' castle stood on the site, the present building is largely a rebuild of the late fifteenth century, carried out chiefly under Prince-Bishop Friedrich II von Zollern between roughly 1486 and 1505. Its courtyard is celebrated for illusionistic trompe-l'oeil painting from around 1499, fictive windows, oriels, bays and stonework rendered on flat façades, among the most important late-Gothic façade paintings in Germany, alongside a covered parapet walk and a painted clock tower. Today the castle houses the Staatsgalerie Füssen, a branch of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, together with a municipal gallery of nineteenth-century painting.
Did you know? Much of the castle's grandeur is a bluff. The oriels, windows and carved stone across its courtyard walls are flat paintings from around 1499, counted among Germany's most important late-Gothic façade illusions.
