About Füssen
The town almost everyone drives through on the way to Ludwig's castles, a medieval Alpine gem of painted houses, a lute-making past, and the Romantic Road's very last mile.
Füssen is a small town in the Ostallgäu district of Bavarian Swabia, set on the river Lech about a kilometre from the Austrian border, with an old-town core at roughly 808 metres. Founded on the Roman road station of the Via Claudia Augusta, it grew into a significant centre of European lute and violin making; the earliest known lute-makers' guild statute was issued here in 1562. Its medieval street plan survives around the Reichenstrasse, lined with colourfully painted houses, fountains and stretches of the old town wall, all rising above the Lech beneath the High Castle and the abbey church of St Mang. Today Füssen is best known as the southern terminus of the Romantic Road and the principal gateway to the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, a few kilometres northeast in Schwangau, drawing millions of visitors on their way to the mountains.
Did you know? Füssen issued Europe's earliest known lute-makers' guild statute in 1562. For two centuries its violin and lute makers supplied instruments across the continent, floating them down the Lech toward Venice.
