About Mary's Bridge (Marienbrücke)
A slender iron footbridge flung across a gorge ninety metres up. It gives the one postcard view of Neuschwanstein, and is the most photographed spot in Bavaria.
The Marienbrücke, or Mary's Bridge, is a slender iron footbridge spanning the Pöllat Gorge just east of Neuschwanstein, roughly 90 metres above the Pöllat waterfall. It is named after Queen Marie of Prussia, wife of Maximilian II and mother of Ludwig II. King Maximilian II first had a wooden footbridge built here in 1845; in 1866 Ludwig II replaced it with the present iron structure, engineered by Heinrich Gerber and fabricated at the Gustavsburg works of the Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Nürnberg.
Cantilevered between rock anchors on either side of the gorge rather than resting on piers, the bridge gives the classic postcard panorama of Neuschwanstein and is the most photographed viewpoint of the castle. Access is seasonal: it is frequently closed in winter or in icy conditions and becomes extremely crowded in high season. It remains a short, narrow pedestrian crossing, not a road bridge.
Did you know? Almost every famous photograph of Neuschwanstein is taken from this one spot. The bridge, not the castle grounds, is the source of the postcard image, which is why it ranks among the most photographed places in Germany.
