About Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein)

A shy Bavarian king built this mountaintop fantasy for the operas of Richard Wagner, then lived in it barely half a year. The world calls it the ultimate castle.

Schloss Neuschwanstein is a 19th-century historicist palace, not a genuine medieval fortress. King Ludwig II of Bavaria laid its foundation stone on 5 September 1869 on a rugged hill above Hohenschwangau, near Füssen, at roughly 1,008 metres. The stage designer Christian Jank conceived its silhouette; the architect Eduard Riedel and his successors engineered it. Its rooms are dedicated to Richard Wagner, whom Ludwig idolised, and their murals draw on operas such as Lohengrin, Tannhäuser and Parsifal.

The castle was never completed. Of more than 200 planned rooms, only about 15 were finished, and Ludwig spent a total of only 172 days there before his death in 1886. Contrary to popular belief, it did not bankrupt the Bavarian state; Ludwig funded it privately, though he accrued heavy personal debts. Opened to visitors within weeks of his death, it now draws more than 1.3 million people a year and inspired Disney's fairy-tale castles.

Did you know? Ludwig never called it Neuschwanstein. In his own lifetime the castle was known as New Hohenschwangau Castle; the fairy-tale name everyone uses today was only attached to it after the king died in 1886.
