Alpsee

Alpsee features on the Gingerguide audio walk through Neuschwanstein. Give it roughly ~60 min: enough to look, hear a two to three minute story on the spot, and ask the AI guide whatever the story leaves open.

About Alpsee

The green-blue lake at the foot of the castles has a wild, walkable shore that almost every visitor hurries straight past. Slow down and it is the calmest hour here.

The Alpsee is a clear alpine lake at Hohenschwangau, lying directly below Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles at a surface elevation of about 814 metres. It covers almost one square kilometre, reaches a depth of around 62 metres, and has just under five kilometres of shoreline, most of it left in a natural state within a protected nature reserve.

A circular footpath of roughly five kilometres runs around the lake, taking about an hour to walk. Swimming is popular in summer and rowing boats can be hired; the water is cold and clear. The lake formed part of the Bavarian royal family's landscape, and the shoreline paths retrace routes once used by the royals descending from Hohenschwangau Castle. It should not be confused with the larger Großer Alpsee near Immenstadt, a separate lake that happens to share the name.

Did you know? For such a modest-looking lake, the Alpsee is surprisingly deep, at around 62 metres, yet you can walk its entire shoreline, just under five kilometres, in about an hour on a nearly level path.
