About Hohenschwangau Castle (Schloss Hohenschwangau)

The honey-yellow castle below Neuschwanstein is the one where the royal family really lived. Rebuilt from a ruin, it raised the boy who would dream up the castle above.

Schloss Hohenschwangau is a neo-Gothic castle below Neuschwanstein, distinctive for its ochre-yellow walls. It stands on the site of a medieval castle, Schwanstein, first documented in 1397 and later fallen into ruin. Crown Prince Maximilian of Bavaria, the future King Maximilian II and father of Ludwig II, bought the property in 1832 and rebuilt it between 1833 and roughly 1837, with the court architect Domenico Quaglio designing the exterior; after Quaglio's death in 1837 the work was continued by Joseph Daniel Ohlmüller and Georg Friedrich Ziebland.

The castle served as the summer and hunting residence of the Bavarian royal family and was the childhood home of Ludwig II. Inside, more than 90 murals depict the history of Schwangau and Germanic legends such as Lohengrin and Parzival, the swan themes that shaped Ludwig. Still owned by the House of Wittelsbach through their compensation fund, it is open as a museum furnished with royal-era interiors.

Did you know? The place is far older than it looks. A castle named Schwanstein stood on this rock and appears in records from 1397, but by the early 1800s it had fallen to ruin; the building you tour today was rebuilt in the 1830s.
