About St Mang's Basilica (Basilika St. Mang)
The golden Baroque basilica built over the grave of a wandering monk who brought Christianity to these Alps, with a Romanesque crypt below holding one of Bavaria's oldest wall paintings.
St Mang's Basilica is the former Benedictine abbey church of Kloster St. Mang in Füssen. Since the abbey's secularisation in 1802–03 it has served as the town's Catholic parish church. The present Baroque church and monastery were rebuilt in the early eighteenth century, the church roughly between 1701 and 1717, to designs by the Füssen-born architect Johann Jakob Herkomer, who introduced Venetian and North-Italian Baroque forms. The abbey grew up around the grave of St Magnus, or Mang, the missionary venerated as the Apostle of the Allgäu, who by tradition died about 772. Beneath the Baroque church a Romanesque crypt survives at his tomb, preserving an early wall-painting fragment traditionally dated to around 980, counted among the oldest in Bavaria. The former monastery buildings now house the Museum der Stadt Füssen, and the church carries the papal title of minor basilica.
Did you know? Below the golden Baroque church lies a Romanesque crypt, and on one wall survives a painting fragment traditionally dated to around 980, counted among the oldest wall paintings in all of Bavaria.
