About Mont-Saint-Michel

Some places you have seen a thousand times before you ever arrive, and Mont-Saint-Michel is one of them. A steep pyramid of grey stone and spires rises straight out of a vast, flat bay off the Normandy coast, crowned by an abbey and, at the very top, a golden archangel. At low tide it stands in a desert of sand; at high tide the sea slides back around it and it seems to float.

There is really only one way through it. A single narrow street, the Grande Rue, winds up from the gate past crowded souvenir shops, creperies and the famous Mère Poulard inn, climbing all the way to the abbey at the summit. Ramparts ring the lower town, and from them the whole silver bay opens out. It is tiny; barely a few dozen people actually live here.

The story starts in 708 when, so the legend goes, the archangel Michael appeared to a local bishop and told him to build a church on the rock. A great Benedictine abbey grew into the Gothic masterpiece called La Merveille, 'the Marvel', and drew pilgrims from across Europe. The Mont held out against the English in the Hundred Years' War, and after the Revolution it became, improbably, a prison. UNESCO listed it in 1979.

The bay itself is half the drama. Its tides are among the largest in continental Europe, rising and falling as much as fourteen metres, and the sea can come in startlingly fast across the flats, which also hide real quicksand. For over a century a raised causeway let the bay silt up; a new dam and a slender footbridge, opened in 2014, now let the water flush through and surround the Mont again.

It is one of the most visited spots in France, so timing is everything. Come early or stay into the evening, when the day-trippers thin out and the place turns quiet and strange. Walk the ramparts, climb to the abbey, split one of those puffy omelettes, and watch the water. Then let the lanes pull you upward. Start walking.

Did you know?

Three things most visitors miss

Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey

After the French Revolution the abbey was not a church but a prison. Nicknamed the 'Bastille des Mers', it held political prisoners for around seventy years before finally closing under Napoleon III in 1863.

La Merveille

La Merveille rises in three stacked storeys against the Mont's steep north face, an early-thirteenth-century solution to a simple problem: the granite rock offered no flat ground to build a monastery the ordinary way.

The Cloister

The cloister is famous for its columns set in staggered double rows, a rippling design often traced to English Gothic; guidebooks put the count near a hundred and thirty-seven, though the true number is disputed.
