About Parish Church of Saint-Pierre

The village's own parish church, dedicated to Saint Peter, patron of fishermen; small and tucked into the village below the great abbey, it has stayed a place of worship.

Saint-Pierre is the parish church of Mont-Saint-Michel, serving the village community rather than the monks of the abbey above. A small building dedicated to Saint Peter, patron of fishermen, it was constructed mainly in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, though its exact chronology is uncertain, with sources placing building phases across the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries and older Romanesque pillars surviving inside. It stands along the Grande Rue, its apse reaching out over the lane, with the village cemetery beside it.

Unlike the abbey, which became a prison during the Revolution, the parish church remained a place of worship and still serves the community today, hosting services, concerts and cultural events. It holds a statue of Saint Michael and has been an official site of devotion to the archangel since 1886; a silvered figure of Saint Michael slaying the dragon stands nearby, and a carillon installed in 1964 plays a hymn to the saint. The church lies within the UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 1979.

Did you know? While the Revolution turned the abbey above into a prison, the little parish church of Saint-Pierre carried on as a place of worship, and it still holds services, concerts and events today.
