About The Bay and Its Tides
One of Europe's greatest tidal ranges empties and floods this bay twice a day, uncovering kilometres of sand and quicksand before the sea sweeps back around the Mont.
The Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel is a large bay on the English Channel, straddling the boundary between Brittany and Normandy's Cotentin peninsula and fed by three rivers, the Couesnon, the Sée and the Sélune. It has one of the largest tidal ranges in continental Europe: roughly 10 metres on average, around 12 to 14 metres at ordinary spring tides, and up to about 15 at the highest. At low tide the sea can withdraw as much as 10 to 15 kilometres, exposing vast flats of sand and mud that hide real, shifting quicksand.
Two granite islets rise from the bay, Mont-Saint-Michel and Tombelaine to the north. The Mont and its bay became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and the wider bay was listed as a Ramsar wetland in 1994. Guided walks led by certified guides let visitors cross the flats, but crossing alone is dangerous because of the tides and quicksand. Tidal bores can still appear at the highest tides, though they have grown less frequent since recent restoration works.
Did you know? The saying that the tide rushes in 'as fast as a galloping horse,' often credited to Victor Hugo, is an exaggeration; the fastest measured advance is about six kilometres an hour.
