About Chapelle Saint-Aubert
A tiny Romanesque chapel perched on a rock at the Mont's seaward foot, dedicated to Bishop Aubert of Avranches, the man tradition credits with founding the sanctuary above.
The Chapelle Saint-Aubert is a small chapel on a rocky outcrop at the northwest foot of Mont-Saint-Michel, below the ramparts and close to the tidal sands. It is dedicated to Saint Aubert d'Avranches, the bishop whom tradition credits with founding the sanctuary on the Mont. The building is a modest rectangular structure in a plain Romanesque style, with a two-slope roof, two small round-arched windows, and a statue of Saint Aubert crowning its gable. Most sources date it to the 12th century, most likely under Abbot Robert de Torigni, though a few place the present fabric in the 15th.
Distinct from the great abbey church at the summit, it is a separate oratory-like structure at the base of the rock that perpetuates the founding memory of the Mont. Classified as a monument historique in 1908, it has since been the object of a heritage restoration backed by the Fondation du patrimoine and the site's official management. Standing on the seaward side, it can appear ringed by water at the highest tides.
Did you know? The chapel honours Saint Aubert, the bishop of Avranches whom legend says the Archangel Michael visited in 708 with an order to build a sanctuary here. It is that founding story in stone.
