About La Grande Rue

The Mont's single medieval main street, steep and narrow, climbing about 200 metres from the village gates to the abbey between crowded rows of shops, inns and old houses.

La Grande Rue is the single main street of Mont-Saint-Michel, winding steeply up from the village entrance to the abbey at the summit. Only about 200 metres long and often very narrow, it runs between two rows of shops, hotels and restaurants, and has kept its medieval houses and old shop signs, several with picturesque names. For centuries this was the pilgrims' route, the way the faithful climbed toward the church, and it passes the parish church of Saint-Pierre on the way up.

Entry is guarded by three successive gates, the Porte de l'Avancée, the Porte du Boulevard and the Porte du Roi. Off the street branches the Ruelle des Cocus, the narrowest lane on the Mont. The village once held around 400 people in the Middle Ages and over a thousand during the prison years, but today only a few dozen live here permanently. The Grande Rue and village lie within the site inscribed by UNESCO in 1979.

Did you know? The Grande Rue climbs barely 200 metres from the gates to the abbey, yet it is the Mont's only real street; king and pilgrim alike have always had to walk up it on foot.
