About La Merveille
The Gothic 'Marvel', a three-storey monastery block stacked up the sheer north face of the rock in the early 1200s, holding the monks' refectory, great halls and cloister.
La Merveille, meaning 'the Marvel', is the Gothic monastery complex built against the steep northern face of Mont-Saint-Michel in the early thirteenth century. After the town was burned in 1204 during the French conquest of Normandy, a donation from King Philip Augustus helped fund the work, carried out over roughly 1211 to 1228. With no level ground to build on, the monks stacked three storeys vertically up the cliff, an engineering achievement remarkable for its day.
The lower level held the cellar and the almonry, where the poor were received; the middle level the guests' hall, where abbots received kings and nobles, and the vast Salle des Chevaliers; and the top level the refectory and cloister. The refectory is lit by tall, narrow windows recessed into the wall's thickness, so light floods in although few openings show from inside. La Merveille is counted among the masterpieces of medieval Gothic architecture and part of the UNESCO site inscribed in 1979.
Did you know? La Merveille rises in three stacked storeys against the Mont's steep north face, an early-thirteenth-century solution to a simple problem: the granite rock offered no flat ground to build a monastery the ordinary way.
