About Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey
The abbey crowning the granite islet, its Gothic spire topped by a gilded Saint Michael, a great medieval pilgrimage church that later spent seventy years as a state prison.
The abbey stands at the summit of the granite islet, a Benedictine sanctuary whose church rises roughly 80 metres above the bay. By tradition its monastic story began in 708, when Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, raised an oratory on the rock then called Mont-Tombe, soon renamed Mont-Saint-Michel au péril de la mer. In 966 Duke Richard I of Normandy installed Benedictine monks, and construction of the Romanesque abbey church began around 1023, making the mount a great pilgrimage centre of the medieval West.
The choir collapsed in 1421 and was rebuilt in Flamboyant Gothic between 1446 and 1523. A neo-Gothic spire was added in the 1890s, bringing the summit to about 170 metres, and a gilded statue of Saint Michael by Emmanuel Frémiet was placed on it around 1897. Dissolved in 1791, the abbey served as a state prison until 1863; it was classified a Monument Historique in 1874 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
Did you know? After the French Revolution the abbey was not a church but a prison. Nicknamed the 'Bastille des Mers', it held political prisoners for around seventy years before finally closing under Napoleon III in 1863.
