About Tombelaine

A wild, uninhabited granite islet a few kilometres north of the Mont, now a protected bird reserve, and once the English base for a siege that never cracked Mont-Saint-Michel.

Tombelaine is a small, uninhabited tidal islet in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, a few kilometres north of the Mont and about 3.5 kilometres from the Cotentin coast near Genêts, to which commune it belongs. It is a bare granite rock, roughly 250 metres long, 150 wide and 45 high, and it has been a protected bird reserve since 1985, a breeding ground for gulls and passerines. It can be reached on foot at low tide, but only with a guide across the sand flats.

The islet has a long history of its own. A priory was founded here in 1137 by Bernard du Bec, and it became a place of pilgrimage. During the Hundred Years' War the English occupied Tombelaine from 1423, using it as a base for attacks on Mont-Saint-Michel. In 1666 the marquis de la Chastrière ordered its fortifications destroyed so they could not be reused. The French state bought the island in 1933, and it was declared a historic monument in 1936.

Did you know? During the Hundred Years' War the English occupied Tombelaine from 1423 and used it as a base to attack Mont-Saint-Michel. The abbey rock across the water, famously, was never taken.
