The lone Gothic tower on the square is all that survives of Kraków's medieval town hall, pulled down around 1820, and it leans, faintly, to this day.
The Town Hall Tower is a Gothic tower on the south-west side of the Main Market Square and the only surviving part of Kraków's medieval town hall, the rest of which was demolished in the years around 1820. Built of brick and stone, it stands roughly 70 metres tall and originates in the late 13th or early 14th century. The tower leans slightly, about 55 centimetres off the vertical, a tilt commonly attributed to a storm in 1703, though that cause is a repeated attribution rather than a firmly documented fact.
Today the tower is a branch of the Museum of Kraków and can be climbed to viewing points near its top. Its cellars, which once held a prison and torture chamber, now contain a cafe and a small theatre space. Standing close to the Cloth Hall, it forms part of the Old Town inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
