About Main Market Square (Rynek Główny)
One of Europe's largest medieval squares, a two-hundred-metre brick plain laid out in 1257 and still the beating heart of Kraków, trumpet calls, pigeons, cafes and all.
Rynek Główny, the Main Market Square, is the vast central square of Kraków's Old Town, measuring roughly 200 metres on each side and covering about 3.79 hectares. It was laid out in 1257, when Duke Bolesław V the Chaste re-chartered the town under Magdeburg rights on a fresh grid plan drawn up after the Mongol invasions of the 13th century. The regular streets of the Old Town radiate from the square, entering at its corners rather than the middle of each side.
Ringed by historic townhouses and palaces, the square holds several of Kraków's landmarks: the Cloth Hall down its centre, St Mary's Basilica, the Town Hall Tower, the small Romanesque Church of St Adalbert, and the Adam Mickiewicz Monument. Igor Mitoraj's bronze head sculpture Eros Bendato has stood here since 2005. Part of the Old Town inscribed on the first UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978, it remains Kraków's social and ceremonial heart.
