About St Florian's Gate (Brama Floriańska)

The grand northern gateway into the Old Town, its Gothic tower crowned by a Baroque helmet, and the starting point of the Royal Route to Wawel.

St Florian's Gate is a Gothic gate-tower of the early 14th century and one of Kraków's oldest surviving structures, built as part of the city walls begun after 1285, when the town gained the right to fortify itself following Mongol and Tatar raids. The tower rises about 34.5 metres; its Gothic stone and brick storeys are capped by a Baroque helmet roof added in the 1660s. A stone relief of St Florian marks the outer face and a Piast eagle the town side.

As the main northern entrance, it begins the Royal Route, which runs down Floriańska Street through the Main Market Square and Grodzka Street to Wawel, the ceremonial path of coronation and funeral processions. It survived the early-19th-century clearance of Kraków's walls, one of the few gates left, standing with neighbouring towers and the nearby Barbican.

Did you know? Every Polish coronation and royal funeral procession passed through this arch on its way along the Royal Route to Wawel Hill, the paving is Kraków's original red carpet.
