About Collegium Maius (Collegium Maius, Jagiellonian University)

The oldest building of the Jagiellonian University, wrapped around a serene arcaded Gothic courtyard, where a young Copernicus once studied the heavens before turning them upside down.

Collegium Maius is the oldest surviving building of the Jagiellonian University, a largely 15th-century structure formed by joining several earlier townhouses around an arcaded Gothic courtyard. The university was founded in 1364 by King Casimir III the Great and refounded in 1400 under King Władysław II Jagiełło, endowed by a bequest from Queen Jadwiga. It is one of the oldest universities in Central Europe, though Charles University in Prague, founded in 1348, is older.

Nicolaus Copernicus studied at the Kraków Academy in the 1490s, matriculating in 1491, but left without taking a degree. The building now houses the Jagiellonian University Museum, with historic astronomical and scientific instruments, including the Jagiellonian Globe, one of the earliest to depict the Americas. Its historic interiors include the Aula, the Libraria, the Treasury and the professors' Common Room, and an astronomical clock plays a melody in the courtyard.

Did you know? Copernicus enrolled here in 1491 and studied astronomy and maths, but slipped away without ever collecting a degree, Kraków shaped the man who moved the Earth, but never graduated him.
