About Wawel Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski na Wawelu)

The royal castle crowning Wawel Hill, its three-tiered Renaissance courtyard among the finest north of the Alps, and once the ceremonial heart of the Polish kingdom.

Wawel Royal Castle stands on Wawel Hill above the Vistula, the residence of Polish monarchs and the ceremonial centre of the kingdom until the court moved to Warsaw around 1596 to 1609. Under King Sigismund I the Old it was rebuilt in the early 16th century as a Renaissance palace with a monumental three-storey arcaded courtyard, designed by the Italian architects Francesco Fiorentino and Bartolomeo Berrecci, and often called one of the finest Renaissance courtyards north of the Alps.

Today it is a museum with several routes, among them the State Rooms, the Royal Private Apartments, the Crown Treasury and Armoury, home to Szczerbiec, the coronation sword, the Oriental Collection and the 'Lost Wawel' archaeological display. Its treasures include the 16th-century Brussels tapestries, the arrasy, commissioned by King Sigismund II Augustus. The castle forms part of the Historic Centre of Kraków, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1978.

Did you know? A bronze dragon by the river below the castle actually breathes fire on cue, honouring the Smok Wawelski of legend, a beast said to have denned beneath the hill, but only in folklore.
