About Planty Park (Planty)
A four-kilometre ring of green wraps the entire Old Town, growing where Kraków's medieval walls and moat once stood before the nineteenth century swept them away.
The Planty is a green belt that rings the whole medieval Old Town of Kraków, forming a near-continuous circuit about 4 kilometres long around the historic core. Its area is usually given as about 21 hectares, and its width varies greatly, from a narrow strip to more than 100 metres in places. Rather than a single park, it is a chain of connected garden sections, dotted with fountains, monuments and busts of Polish cultural figures, and it is one of the city's most-used walking routes.
It was laid out in stages, chiefly between about 1822 and 1830, on the ground freed when the medieval city walls were demolished and the defensive moat filled in under Austrian rule. A short section of the old defences was saved and still stands beside the park, St Florian's Gate, a stretch of wall, and the Barbican. The Planty lies within the UNESCO World Heritage 'Historic Centre of Kraków', inscribed in 1978.
