About St Mary's Basilica (Bazylika Mariacka)

The brick-Gothic church whose mismatched towers crown the square, where a live trumpet call breaks off mid-note every hour, and a Veit Stoss altarpiece fills the dark inside.

St Mary's Basilica is a Brick-Gothic church on the north-east corner of the Main Market Square, dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The present building was raised largely in the 14th and 15th centuries, on the site of an earlier 13th-century church. Its two towers are of unequal height: the taller, about 80 metres, served as the city's watchtower and carries the trumpet, while the shorter, about 69 metres, is the bell tower.

Every hour a trumpeter plays the hejnał mariacki live from the taller tower, sounding it to the four points of the compass; it always breaks off abruptly, and the noon call is broadcast nationwide by Polish Radio. The high altar holds a monumental carved wooden altarpiece by Veit Stoss, made 1477-1489 and among the largest Gothic altarpieces in Europe; it was looted in the Second World War, then recovered and returned. The basilica remains a working parish and one of Kraków's most visited monuments.

Did you know? The hejnał's abrupt cut-off is famously blamed on a trumpeter shot in the throat by a Tatar arrow, a stirring tale with no historical evidence, popularised by a 1928 American children's novel.
