About Cloth Hall (Sukiennice)

The Renaissance cloth market marching down the middle of the square, amber and souvenir stalls below, a gallery of nineteenth-century Polish painting above, mascaron faces grinning from the roof.

The Sukiennice, or Cloth Hall, is the long market building running down the centre of Kraków's Main Market Square. A covered hall for cloth traders since the Middle Ages, it stood as a Gothic trading hall from the 13th to 14th century and became a major centre of international trade in its 15th-century golden age, handling imported spices, silk, leather and wax against Kraków's exports of textiles, lead and salt.

After a fire in 1555 it was rebuilt in Renaissance form, work associated with Giovanni Maria Padovano, with a parapet of carved mascarons attributed to Santi Gucci. The Neo-Gothic arcades along its sides were added in a renovation of 1875-1879 designed by Tomasz Pryliński. Today the ground-floor arcade holds market stalls selling souvenirs, amber and crafts, while upstairs is the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art, a branch of the National Museum in Kraków. It is one of the city's most recognisable buildings and part of the UNESCO-listed Old Town.

Did you know? Run your eye along the roofline and a row of carved stone faces, mascarons, pull grotesque expressions back at you; they are credited to the sculptor Santi Gucci, added in the Renaissance rebuild.
