About Kraków Barbican (Barbakan)

A round brick war-machine that squats outside the Old Town walls, bristling with seven turrets and once linked to St Florian's Gate by a fortified corridor across the moat.

The Kraków Barbican is a round Gothic brick outpost built around 1498-1499, in the reign of King Jan Olbracht, to reinforce the city's northern gate after the Ottoman and Tatar threat that followed Poland's defeat at Bukovina in 1497. Circular in plan, it has walls up to about three metres thick, seven turret watchtowers, and a tight interior yard roughly twenty-four metres across, and was originally ringed by a moat.

A fortified neck once carried a covered passage across the moat to St Florian's Gate, making the barbican and gate a single defended northern entrance. It survived the early-19th-century demolition of Kraków's medieval walls, which were replaced by the Planty green belt, thanks partly to professor Feliks Radwański, who argued for its preservation in 1817. One of the few barbicans still standing in Europe, and among the best preserved, it is now part of the Museum of Kraków.

Did you know? A cherished Kraków legend says a townsman named Marcin Oracewicz, out of shot, loaded his gun with a coat button and killed a Russian colonel here in 1768, charming, but unproven.
