About Dragon's Den (Smocza Jama)

At the foot of Wawel Hill, a real cave winds through ancient limestone, and outside it, a bronze dragon breathes actual fire on anyone who waits long enough.

Smocza Jama, the Dragon's Den, is a karst cave in the Jurassic limestone of Wawel Hill, opening onto the Vistula river side of the castle rock. It is the best known of several caves within the hill. The full system runs about 270 metres, but only a short stretch of roughly 81 metres is open to the public, reached by a spiral staircase of about 135 steps that descends from near the Thieves' Tower and exits at the riverbank. The cave is accessible only in the warm season, roughly April to October, and is administered as part of the Wawel Royal Castle site.

In legend the cave was the lair of the Wawel Dragon, slain in the tale of Kraków's mythical founder, King Krak. At the riverside exit stands a bronze dragon sculpture by Bronisław Chromy, installed in 1972, which breathes real gas-fed fire on an automatic cycle every few minutes.

Did you know? The bronze dragon does not only breathe fire on a timer. For years it could be provoked on demand by sending a paid SMS, making it perhaps the only monster in Europe you could summon by text message.
