About Remuh Synagogue (Synagoga Remuh)
The smallest of Kazimierz's historic synagogues is also its most alive, a 1553 prayer house still in use, beside a cemetery of Renaissance tombstones and a wall of broken graves.
The Remuh Synagogue is a small Renaissance synagogue at ul. Szeroka 40 in Kazimierz, the smallest of the district's historic synagogues. Its building privilege is dated 1553, with completion usually placed about 1557, and it was endowed by Israel Isserles Auerbach. It is named for his son, Rabbi Moses Isserles, known by the acronym Remuh, a celebrated 16th-century Talmudist whose gloss, the Mappah, adapted the Shulchan Aruch for Ashkenazi Jews. It remains one of the very few synagogues in Kazimierz still used for regular worship.
Beside it lies the Remuh Cemetery, founded about 1535 and one of the oldest surviving Jewish cemeteries in Poland, with Renaissance-era tombstones; the grave of Rabbi Moses Isserles is a place of pilgrimage. During the Second World War the Nazis devastated the cemetery and its tombstones. After the war, many stones were recovered, and broken fragments that could not be matched were set into a mosaic 'Wailing Wall' along Szeroka Street.
Did you know? The Remuh is one of the very few synagogues in Kazimierz still used for regular worship, founded in the 1550s and named for the great sixteenth-century Talmudist Rabbi Moses Isserles.
