About Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory (Fabryka Emalia Oskara Schindlera)

The plain Zabłocie building where Oskar Schindler kept roughly 1,100 Jewish workers alive now holds Kraków's unflinching museum of the whole city under Nazi occupation.

The building at ul. Lipowa 4, in the Zabłocie area of Podgórze, is the former administrative building of Oskar Schindler's Deutsche Emailwarenfabrik (DEF), the enamelware and later armaments factory known as Emalia. During the German occupation Schindler, a German industrialist and Nazi Party member, employed Jewish workers here and is credited with protecting and ultimately saving them; the figure is usually given as roughly 1,100 to 1,200 people, remembered as the Schindlerjuden. Since June 2010 the building has housed a branch of the Museum of Kraków, whose permanent exhibition, 'Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939-1945', tells the story of the entire occupied city and its Polish and Jewish inhabitants, including the ghetto, rather than a biography of Schindler alone. The factory's story was made globally famous by Steven Spielberg's 1993 film 'Schindler's List', though most of its factory scenes were shot elsewhere.
