About Kazimierz

Once a royal town of its own and for centuries the heart of Jewish Kraków, Kazimierz is now a quarter of old synagogues, courtyards, cafés and late-night music.

Kazimierz is a historic district just south of Kraków's Old Town, on what was once an island between two branches of the Vistula. It was founded as a separate royal town in 1335 by King Casimir III the Great and named after him, remaining independent until it was incorporated into Kraków around the end of the 18th century. From the late 15th and 16th centuries its north-eastern part, around Szeroka Street, became the main centre of Jewish life in Kraków, while the western part stayed largely Christian.

During the Second World War the German occupiers did not confine the Jews in Kazimierz: in March 1941 they were forced across the river into the Kraków Ghetto in Podgórze, and the community was then murdered in the Holocaust. The district, emptied and long neglected, was a filming location for Schindler's List (1993). Since the 1990s it has revived as a lively quarter of synagogues, museums, cafés and nightlife, and lies within the UNESCO World Heritage 'Historic Centre of Kraków'.

Did you know? Kazimierz spent over four hundred years as an independent royal town, founded in 1335 by Casimir the Great and named after him, before it was absorbed into Kraków in the late eighteenth century.
