About Wawel Cathedral (Katedra Wawelska)
The coronation and burial church of Poland's kings, crowned by the gilded dome of the Renaissance Sigismund Chapel and the vast, rarely rung Sigismund Bell.
Wawel Cathedral, officially the Royal Archcathedral Basilica of Saints Stanislaus and Wenceslaus, is the third church on this site, a Gothic building consecrated in 1364 and one of Poland's foremost national sanctuaries. For centuries it served as the coronation and burial church of Polish monarchs, and most Polish kings were crowned and entombed here.
Its Sigismund Chapel, built between 1519 and 1533 by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Berrecci as a mausoleum for Sigismund I the Old and the last Jagiellons, is a Renaissance masterpiece famous for its gilded dome. The Sigismund Bell, cast in 1520 and weighing roughly 11 to 13 tonnes, hangs in the Sigismund Tower and rings only on major occasions. The royal crypts hold kings and national heroes, including the poets Mickiewicz and Słowacki, Kościuszko and Piłsudski, while a silver shrine of St Stanislaus, patron of Poland, stands at its heart.
Did you know? Great prehistoric bones hang chained by the cathedral door; folk belief held they were the Wawel dragon's remains and that the world will end the day they fall, the church treats this as pure legend.
