About Wieliczka Salt Mine (Kopalnia soli Wieliczka)
A hundred metres underground, thirteenth-century miners carved chapels, statues and glittering chandeliers entirely from rock salt, including a vast cathedral of salt honouring St Kinga.
The Wieliczka Salt Mine (Kopalnia soli Wieliczka), about 13 km southeast of Kraków, is a rock-salt mine worked from the 13th century; brine collection at the site is older still, and a royal salt privilege was documented as early as 1044. Salt made the mine a source of great wealth for centuries. Large-scale commercial mining was discontinued in 1996, and limited salt was recovered from its brines until around 2007; today it operates as a museum and tourist site. In 1978 it became one of the first sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The mine reaches about 327 m deep across nine levels, with hundreds of kilometres of passages and thousands of chambers. The tourist route runs about 3.5 km at depths of roughly 64 to 135 m, passing chambers, brine lakes and salt-carved chapels. Its highlight is the underground Chapel of St Kinga, about 101 m down, hand-carved from rock salt by the miners themselves, floor, altarpieces, wall reliefs and salt-crystal chandeliers alike.
Did you know? In 1978 Wieliczka became one of the very first UNESCO World Heritage Sites, named among only twelve inaugural inscriptions on the original list, recognition it earned before World Heritage status was common anywhere.
