About Taksim Square

The modern civic heart of Istanbul, a busy Beyoğlu transport hub named for an Ottoman waterworks, centred on the 1928 Republic Monument and a mosque opened in 2021.

Taksim Square is the modern civic heart of Istanbul, in the Beyoğlu district, and one of the city's main transport hubs. It is the terminus of the İstiklal nostalgic tram, the site of a metro station, and the upper end of the Kabataş–Taksim funicular, which opened in 2006. The name "Taksim" means "division" or "distribution", after the Ottoman stone water-distribution reservoir (maksem) built beside the square by Sultan Mahmud I in 1732.

At its centre stands the Republic Monument (Cumhuriyet Anıtı), unveiled in 1928 by the Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica to commemorate the founding of the Turkish Republic. Its two faces depict Atatürk in military and civilian roles, and it notably includes a Soviet figure among the founders. The Taksim Mosque, inaugurated in 2021, was the first mosque built on the square, following proposals that had been contested since 1952. Gezi Park and the Atatürk Cultural Center adjoin the square.

Did you know? The square's name means "division" or "distribution": it recalls the Taksim Maksemi, a stone reservoir built by Sultan Mahmud I in 1732 to branch Istanbul's water supply toward Galata and beyond.
