About İstiklal Avenue
A 1.4-kilometre pedestrian boulevard in Beyoğlu, once the Grande Rue de Péra, where a red nostalgic tram threads late-Ottoman facades from Tünel Square up to Taksim.
İstiklal Avenue (İstiklal Caddesi) is an approximately 1.4-kilometre pedestrian boulevard in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district, running from Tünel Square to Taksim Square. Historically known as the Grande Rue de Péra and the Ottoman Cadde-i Kebir, or "Grand Avenue", it was renamed İstiklal ("Independence") on 29 October 1923, after the proclamation of the Turkish Republic. It is lined mainly with late-Ottoman buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries in Neo-Classical, Neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau, Beaux-Arts and Art Deco styles.
A historic red "nostalgic" tram runs its length, reinstated in 1990 after the street was pedestrianised. At its lower end the avenue meets the Tünel, an underground funicular inaugurated in 1875 and among the oldest in the world. Landmarks along the avenue include Çiçek Pasajı (the Flower Passage), completed in 1876; Galatasaray High School, one of Turkey's oldest schools; and former embassy buildings, now consulates, reflecting Pera's role as the city's European quarter.
Did you know? The avenue's lower end connects to the Tünel, an underground funicular railway inaugurated in 1875. It is often cited as one of the oldest underground urban rail lines anywhere in the world.
