About Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum (Galata Mevlevihanesi)

Istanbul's oldest whirling-dervish lodge, founded in 1491 and now a museum, where the Mevlevi order's sema ceremony is still performed in an octagonal Baroque hall below the Galata Tower.

The Galata Mevlevi Lodge was founded in 1491, during the reign of Bayezid II, on land granted by the courtier İskender Pasha, and is regarded as the oldest Mevlevi lodge in Istanbul. It belonged to the Sufi order founded on the teachings of the thirteenth-century poet and mystic Rumi, whose defining rite is the sema, the whirling ceremony performed by the dervishes. The lodge stands on Galip Dede Street in Beyoğlu, on the slope below the Galata Tower.

Its octagonal semahane, or ceremonial hall, was rebuilt in Ottoman Baroque style after a fire in 1766. The lodge functioned until 1925, when the Turkish Republic outlawed all dervish lodges, and later reopened, first in 1975 as the Museum of Divan Literature and then, from 2011, as the Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum, where sema ceremonies are again held. Its cemetery holds notable figures including İbrahim Müteferrika, founder of the first Ottoman printing press.

Did you know? The lodge's cemetery holds İbrahim Müteferrika, who founded the first Ottoman printing press in Arabic and Turkish script in the 1720s, alongside the poets Şeyh Galib and Esrar Dede.
