About New Mosque (Yeni Cami)

An imperial mosque on the Eminönü waterfront, built by two royal mothers over sixty years and famous for the pigeons that swarm its forecourt beside the Spice Bazaar.

The New Mosque, formally the Yeni Valide Mosque, stands on the Golden Horn shore at Eminönü, beside the old-city end of the Galata Bridge. Construction began in 1597 for Safiye Sultan, mother of Sultan Mehmed III, under the architect Davud Aga, a pupil of Mimar Sinan. Work stalled after the sultan's death in 1603, and the mosque stood unfinished for more than fifty years.

It was completed between 1660 and 1665 by Turhan Sultan, mother of Mehmed IV, following a great fire in the district; because two queen mothers oversaw it, it is also called the New Queen Mother Mosque. Built in the classical Ottoman style, its central dome rises about 36 metres on four semi-domes between twin minarets. The mosque anchored a large complex that included a royal tomb, a school, fountains and the Spice Bazaar, whose rents funded its charities.

Did you know? Locals call it the Pigeon Mosque for the flocks that mass in its forecourt, fed with seed from vendors. A Rijksmuseum photograph labelled it the 'Duivenmoskee', or Pigeon Mosque, over a century ago.
