About Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı / Egyptian Bazaar)
Istanbul's fragrant spice market, built in the 1660s to endow the New Mosque: an L of domed halls piled with spices, Turkish delight, nuts and teas by the Golden Horn.
The Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı, or Egyptian Bazaar) was built in Eminönü as part of the New Mosque (Yeni Cami) complex and completed in the 1660s, commonly dated to 1664. It was commissioned by the queen mother (valide sultan) Turhan Hatice Sultan, mother of Sultan Mehmed IV, with construction supervised by the royal architect Mustafa Ağa. As an endowment (vakıf), the rents from its shops were dedicated to maintaining the adjoining mosque and its charitable foundation.
The building is an L-shaped covered market of vaulted, domed halls containing roughly 85 shops, and has long been the principal centre of the spice trade in Istanbul. Its stalls sell spices, herbs, Turkish delight, dried fruit, nuts, sweets and teas. The Turkish name means 'Egyptian Bazaar,' variously explained by Egyptian tax revenues linked to its founding or by the Egyptian and Indian Ocean spice trade whose goods were traded there. It sits beside the Golden Horn near the Galata Bridge, and is generally described as the most famous covered market in Istanbul after the Grand Bazaar.
Did you know? The Turkish word 'mısır' means both 'Egypt' and 'maize,' so the market's name, Mısır Çarşısı or Egyptian Bazaar, is sometimes mistranslated as the 'Corn Bazaar,' though not a cob is sold there.
