About Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi)
A cylindrical stone watchtower raised by Genoese colonists in 1348, capped by a conical roof and a circular gallery whose balcony gives a sweeping view over Istanbul.
The Galata Tower was built in 1348 by Genoese colonists as the keystone watchtower at the highest point of the walls of their fortified colony across the Golden Horn, who named it Christea Turris, the Tower of Christ. An earlier Byzantine tower in the area, traced to the reign of Justinian, had been destroyed by Crusaders during the sack of Constantinople in 1204.
The cylindrical stone tower stands about 62.6 metres tall, roughly 16.5 metres across at the base, with walls close to 3.75 metres thick. After the Ottoman conquest of 1453 it served many roles, including as a prison and, from 1717, as a fire-watch station over the largely wooden city. A circular gallery near the top offers a 360-degree panorama over the historic peninsula, the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. It reopened as a state museum in 2020, with visitor numbers capped since 2024.
Did you know? From 1717 the tower worked as a fire-watch station, with watchmen posted in the gallery to scan a capital built largely of wood and sound the alarm whenever smoke rose over the rooftops.
