About Pera Museum
A private art museum in Beyoğlu's Tepebaşı, set in a former 1893 hotel, best known for Osman Hamdi Bey's 1906 painting "The Tortoise Trainer", a wry image of slow reform.
The Pera Museum (Pera Müzesi) is a private art museum in the Tepebaşı quarter of Beyoğlu, opened in 2005 by the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation. It occupies the former Bristol Hotel, a building designed by architect Achille Manoussos in 1893 and converted into a museum by architect Sinan Genim between 2003 and 2005.
The museum's Orientalist Painting Collection brings together European and Ottoman works, and its most celebrated piece is Osman Hamdi Bey's "The Tortoise Trainer", painted in 1906. Other permanent holdings include the Anatolian Weights and Measures Collection, with more than 10,000 objects spanning prehistory to the present, and the Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics Collection, with more than 800 pieces mainly from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The building stands on Meşrutiyet Caddesi in historic Pera.
Did you know? The museum's signature work, "The Tortoise Trainer", shows an elderly man with a ney flute failing to train five tortoises in a shabby room, and is often read as a satire of slow Ottoman reform.
