About Ortaköy Mosque
An ornate Neo-Baroque waterfront mosque in Beşiktaş, built for Sultan Abdülmecid I around 1856 by the Balyan family, standing beside the first Bosphorus Bridge in one of Istanbul's most photographed views.
The Ortaköy Mosque, officially the Büyük Mecidiye Camii, stands on the Bosphorus waterfront in the Ortaköy quarter of Beşiktaş. It was commissioned by Sultan Abdülmecid I and completed around 1854–1856, and was designed by the Armenian architects Garabet and Nigoğos Balyan, the family responsible for the nearby Dolmabahçe Palace and Mosque. Its 19th-century eclectic architecture blends Neo-Baroque and Neoclassical elements with ornate stone carving, two minarets and a single dome.
Inside, the dome carries trompe-l'oeil frescoes, and several calligraphy panels were executed by Sultan Abdülmecid I, an accomplished calligrapher. The mosque's fluted minarets were rebuilt after the 1894 Istanbul earthquake, its dome was reconstructed in concrete in the 1960s, and a further restoration was completed in 2014. Standing immediately beside the first Bosphorus Bridge, opened in 1973, it forms one of Istanbul's most photographed juxtapositions of Ottoman and modern architecture.
