About The Bosphorus
A 31-kilometre strait dividing Europe from Asia, carrying two currents at once, lined with wooden mansions and palaces, and crossed by ferries, bridges, and an undersea tunnel.
The Bosphorus is a natural strait roughly 31 kilometres long that connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, and from there, through the Dardanelles, to the Aegean and the Mediterranean. It forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia, so its western (Rumelian) and eastern (Anatolian) shores lie on two different continents. The channel ranges from about 700 metres to some 3,420 metres wide, with a midstream depth averaging around 65 metres.
The strait is known for a two-layer current, in which a brackish surface flow moves south from the Black Sea while a denser, saltier undercurrent moves north near the bottom. Its shores carry roughly 620 Ottoman-era wooden mansions, or yali, alongside imperial palaces such as Topkapi and Dolmabahce. Three bridges cross it, opened in 1973, 1988 and 2016, supplemented by the Marmaray rail tunnel and a road tunnel beneath the waterway.
Did you know? The Bosphorus behaves like two rivers in one: a brackish surface layer flows south from the Black Sea at roughly 16,000 cubic metres per second, while a saltier undercurrent flows north beneath it.
