About Maiden's Tower (Kiz Kulesi)
A small tower on an islet at the Bosphorus's mouth, wrapped in snake and drowned-lover legends, though the visible structure is largely an 18th-century rebuild restored in 2023.
The Maiden's Tower, or Kiz Kulesi, stands on a small islet at the southern mouth of the Bosphorus, about 200 metres off the Uskudar shore on the Asian side of Istanbul. In Western tradition it is also known as Leander's Tower. A wooden tower stood on the islet from around 1110, under the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos, but after earthquake and fire damage the present masonry tower was rebuilt in stone in 1725 and 1763.
Over the centuries the tower served as a customs and watch point, a lighthouse, and, from 1829, a quarantine station, and was restored under Sultan Mahmud II in 1832. A major restoration was completed in May 2023, after which it reopened to visitors. Tradition holds that the islet was fortified as early as the fifth or fourth century BC, though such early dates are uncertain, and the structure visible today is a restored eighteenth-century-and-later tower rather than an ancient one.
Did you know? Legend says an emperor, warned that his daughter would die of a snakebite, sequestered her on this islet, only for a snake hidden in a basket of fruit to reach her, supposedly naming the tower.
