About Kadıköy

Istanbul's buzzing Asian-side district, built on ancient Chalcedon and reached by ferry. A sprawling street market of fish and produce gives way to café-lined Moda and a famous bronze bull.

Kadıköy is a busy district on the Asian side of Istanbul, reached by ferry across the water from the historic peninsula. It stands on the site of ancient Chalcedon, a colony founded by settlers from Megara in the 7th century BC, roughly a generation before Byzantium was established on the opposite shore. The modern name means 'village of the judge (kadı)', traced to Hızır Bey, the first kadı of the city after the Ottoman conquest.

The district centres on a large street market, or çarşı, beginning near the Osman Ağa Mosque, with fishmongers, greengrocers and specialty shops, alongside the leafy Moda quarter and a dense café, restaurant and bar scene. Its best-known landmark is the bronze Bull at Altıyol, a 19th-century sculpture signed by the French animalier Isidore Bonheur, relocated to Kadıköy in the late 1980s. In 451 the Council of Chalcedon met here, in the church of St. Euphemia.

Did you know? Greek settlers founded Chalcedon here about a generation before Byzantium rose across the water. The historian Herodotus reports a Persian jibe that its founders must have been blind to overlook the far better opposite shore.
