About Chora Church (Kariye Mosque)
A small Byzantine church near the land walls, lined with dazzling 14th-century mosaics and frescoes, now a working mosque again where figural images are curtained during prayers.
The Chora (Kariye) stands in the Edirnekapi district of Fatih, just inside Istanbul's Theodosian land walls. Its Greek name, meaning 'country' or 'in the fields', recalls the original monastery that once lay outside Constantine's earlier walls. The core of the present cross-in-square church was largely rebuilt around 1077-1081 by Maria Doukaina, mother-in-law of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos.
Between about 1315 and 1321 the statesman and scholar Theodore Metochites commissioned the mosaic and fresco cycles, depicting the lives of the Virgin and Christ, that are widely regarded as among the finest surviving Byzantine art; the celebrated Anastasis fresco fills the funerary side chapel. Converted to a mosque in the early 16th century and secularised as a museum in 1945, the building became a mosque once more after a 2020 decree, reopening for worship in 2024. Its figural images are curtained or covered during prayer times.
Did you know? The name Chora means 'country' or 'fields' in Greek: the first monastery here stood outside the city's earlier walls, and the name stuck even after Theodosius II's land walls enclosed the neighbourhood around 413.
